Vale Of Tears - Oxymora I.

(Francesco Scarci)

Alea Jacta Est - Ad Augusta

(Francesco Scarci)

Steamachine - City of Death

2 Ton Predator - Boogie

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine

Brick Bath - I Won’t Live the Lie

BACK IN TIME: recensione gentilmente concessa da Nihil Zine
Inoltre, 'I Won’t Live the Lie' suona più immediato di 'The Great Southern Trendkill', e scusate se è poco. I contenuti testuali, invece, lasciano alquanto a desiderare.

(Francesco Scarci)

Soilwork - A Predator's Portrait

#FOR FANS OF: Melo Death/Metalcore
This is an interesting album but it doesn't top its predecessor 'The Chainheart Machine'. The riffs are good but not to that caliber. And the vocals are a little more laid back mixed with some clean bits. The music is what's awesome on here. The melodic rhythms that go along with the clean vocals (at times). I liked this release, it is just a little step down from the previous. The leads were outstanding though. As this was the older lineup. These guys have had a great career in music some good releases and some duds. This one is definitely not the latter, it's quality melodic death metal. The intensity is there just not as much.

They mellowed out on this release but the vocals feature a lot of screaming. It's like a mix of melodic death with metalcore. I don't like metalcore much but the music is quality. I just don't like the fact that their intensity lessened hence the "75" rating.

Their modern sound is like this too, their most recent has a lot of mellow parts to them. 'Övergivenheten' which means "The Abandonment" is their latest release that sounds a bit like this. I like both almost equally. They'll never get to the degree of 'The Chainheart Machine' but they're still a good band releasing good music. They just fizzed out whereas they could've progressed musically. I'm still a fan of the band but I just had to lower my expectations of their releases after 'The Chainheart Machine'. There are some good songs on here mainly these: "Neurotic Rampage", "Final Fatal Force" and the title track.

They're dealing with the loss of David Andersson who joined the band in 2012-2022. He died last year at 47 years of age. They can still get to the caliber of this album as they did of their most recent. 'A Predator's Portrait' had some dynamite songs! They've just chilled out.

There will never be a Soilwork of this degree again, but that doesn't mean that they're done as a band. This album is a good follow-up, just not nearly as good as their predecessor. I hope that they keep producing albums though! (Death8699)

Parahuman - Affliction

(Francesco Scarci)

Soilwork - The Chainheart Machine

#FOR FANS OF: Melo Death
I know it's a little much to give this album a perfect score, but I can't say anything except positive things about it. However, I may be biased because melodic death metal is my favorite genre in metal. They seem to fall under this category early on in their career changing some over the years. But this album is a landmark release from these Swedish metallers. A good follow-up release dominating over 'Steelbath Suicide' and my all-time favorite Soilwork album in their entire discography. The energy is full throttle throughout the whole album. There wasn't a song on there that I disliked.

The title-track, "Neon Rebels", "Millionflame" and "Spirits of the Future Sun" are my favorites. They tune their guitars down to B I believe, and they're fast the whole way through. The energy is rampant. How these guys put forth such an effort on here is amazing. The energy they have and the original riffs. Blast! What a wild guitar extravaganza in these songs just shining in metal glory. Their later releases don't compare to this one maybe a close call is 'A Predator's Portrait'. That's about it, I see this release as flawless. The vocals compliment the guitar whole handedly. There were really no clean vocals at all!

The only thing that was not that substantial was the length of the album. It clocked in about 40+ minutes. I would've had liked to hear more length or more songs on here. It still reigns supreme in terms of originality, precision and uncompromising energy. These guys just suffered a loss in David but he was not featured on here as he joined the band I believe in 2012. What a tragedy, though. I'm surprised that the average scores on here was at 79%. I always liked this album the most but the critics are the way they are, even in my text here. However, I felt that this was a pinnacle release by the band.

I ordered this CD to show further support for the band and music in extreme metal altogether. Soilwork has so many peaks and valleys in their discography I'll always view 'A Chainheart Machine' as their best. The music, the vocals, the leads, and overall sound met perfection. You can doubt me well just listen to the album. The riffs, leads and vocals are sublime. I'm glad that this is a part of my collection. Old Soilwork is dead, long live old Soilwork! Pick this up a physical copy don't just cheap out and stream it. It's a critical time for the band, they just lost a brother, show them gratitude! (Death8699)

Soulfly - Totem

#FOR FANS OF: Thrash/Groove Death
My first release from Soulfly was 'Savages' which I found to be interesting. This release seemed bland the first few listens to. Then it kind of grew on me. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect here and well this one is a little bit more experimental and cut-throat. I've been a fan of Max Cavalera since the early Sepultura days in the band. He took quite a different approach then those days here is experimental Max. I like it though, the not knowing what to expect here sort of idea. The brutality, the temperance, the enlightenment. It's 40 minutes of in your face metal with vocal effects and odd time signatures.

This type of metal has a bit of a groove to it with death metal components. A really odd release including the leads with terror on the vocals bellowing. These guys have riffs that are simply atypical and sort of bizarre. I don't know how else to describe this album but just that: ATYPICAL. It might be the norm of how Soulfly works and that's how Max wants it, I just sense a peculiar sounds and rhythms. Nothing seems to remain the same it's just different from all respects. Then the clean tone guitars, it gives me pause about the direction the band is taking here. Weird metal and highly atypical.

Forty minutes of this going on what I've described here. It's solid here, Max sounds odd on this it's forceful but not to the extent reflective of Sepultura's Max in your face. Hell, he's in his 50's now still making metal and Igor doing Sepultura tributes too. He's had to relearn their songs but still sounds good. Soulfly is his project. Weird metal it's totally him just whatever he's doing he's putting his thoughts into this music the rhythms are cool and heavy but this experiment with Soulfly puts Max in a different position. I don't hear a plethora of fans liking this band. Those I do because it's metal but it's just different genres.

The anger and brutality is here but Max is in a league of his own dynamics. If he continues in this direction, who knows what to expect on the next LP. More experimenting or something more straightforward? It's unpredictable as to where he's going here. Heavy guitars, clean bouts and vocals with an echo/reverb. This guy is totally metal, it's just his ideas for metal aren't at all the same as the Sepultura days where he's utterly thrash galore. But on 'Roots' is where his strange where his writing went opposed to 'Beneath The Remains' and 'Arise'. I think the expectation is a new Sepultura here with Max but it's so not. Don't expect that at all. For Soulfly fans, this is a keeper! (Death8699)

Ekoa - Chrysalis

Illa - The Body Keeps the Score

The Body Keeps the Score'. (Francesco Scarci)

Once Human - Scar Weaver

#FOR FANS OF: Groove Metal
This album didn't strike me initially as something pivotal in the groove metal scene, but it kind of wore on me. I have utmost respect for the band and their music, it's just not my favorite genre. They firstly sounded a bit metalcoreish but they're not. The music is quite good, reminds me a little of Pantera's 'Far Beyond Driven' with differing vocals. The songs are slow and catchy and the vocals are decent. It's female vox on this one and she does quite a good job in that department. This album also reminds me a little bit of Djent style riff-writing, but not quite there. Not to be confused with Meshuggah-esque type of guitar playing.

I dug most of this release minus the fact that they're a little atypical for my taste. The guitars (aside from Djent) were pretty catchy and noteworthy. I didn't have much of a negative thing to say about them. They're just weird, I suppose. I like the clean vocals when they exhibited them though both formats they were good! The production quality was also good, too. This band is just an acquired taste. I only took off points when I felt that the music seemed to get way "out there." But for the most part, I enjoyed this. These guys make quality groove metal. Some songs remind me (again) of Pantera's song "Shedding Skin."

Why am I giving this a "B-" then if I'm speaking so highly of their performance? I'm not liking the music as much as I should I suppose. There aren't many leads (if any) and the music could've been a little better. The rhythms seem to go on for an eternity nothing really happens and then BOOM! The next song plays. I think though the vocals went in tandem with the music. That's the good part of the album. They really did a good job with keeping it groovy and shouting vocals in agreement with the songs. I would definitely refer listeners to hearing this if they're open minded about different genres of metal.

Overall, I like this band. I'm not sure how much of them are coming out with more new releases in the future but I sure hope so! They are a talented band and I'm sure it took a while to formulate music for this release. And make it into their own despite the similarities to Pantera or not. The vocals are outstanding and the music is better than average. I think that if they can bump it up in the music department then I would've given this a better rating. All in all, it was a good purchase for me and my collection. I'm looking forward to many a more albums in the future by them to own! Take a listen! (Death8699)

District Unknown - Anatomy of a 24 Hour Lifetime

(Alberto Calorosi)

Foul Body Autopsy - Shadows Without Light - Part One

(Francesco Scarci)

Words of Farewell - Inner Universe II

Annihilator - Ballistic, Sadistic

#FOR FANS OF: Speed/Thrash
Never too late to discover an old school band! This is a solid release...it has all of the elements to making a solid album. Everything seemed to flow here and I'd say it's a cross between heavy metal and thrash. I like a lot of the riffs and the sound quality was good! I enjoyed the whole release. They have offered a lot in 30+ years being around in the metal genre. I'd have to say that the older material was a bit raw for me. On here, it's straightforward and to the point. Great songwriting! Every band member does well be it the lead guitar department, rhythms, vocals and drums they're all killing it!

I like how they change things up on here fast/slow/medium tempos but mainly fast in your face type of deal. I think the riffs are the best they've put out in years and fresh! These guys know how to make a quality record! I liked it from beginning to finish. I'm going to look into more of their material! They just tear it up in the music department! The vocals are unique, too! I like what they've done here, for sure! All the band members are way talented and it shows on here. I would definitely say that they're thrash/heavy metal. They've been a consistent band and they're not going away, I hope not!

Talking about the sound quality, well the production quality/mixing was done very nicely! Everyone on here contributes their part it's good that they made some quality riffs because a lot of bands might have it musically but due to low budget the production sucks. This is an example of quality in the sound so it does the LP justice! I'm surprised they're not a well talked about band. I've got a lot of catching up to do on their stuff! They really show maturity and wise musicians. It's an album here that you cannot get sick of. It takes a lot of spins to hear all the sounds but 'Ballistic, Sadistic' never gets (to me) old.

Do the band some good and purchase this on CD! They have a lot to offer metal and if you've been following them over the years this is no surprise to you! I'm glad I stumbled onto this release! They show no sign of quitting anytime soon. This lineup is strong and as I've pointed out, nothing here is half assed. They did a great job showing their excellent musicianship! Be sure to follow them on Spotify or YouTube if you don't want to buy the CD. Keep this one alive and don't discard this modern day aspect of the band. They all are good on here and be sure to take a gander at this one! (Death8699)

CroMagnum - Born Free

Niente male. (Francesco Scarci)

The Nerve - Audiodacity

#PER CHI AMA: Groove Metal, Rage Against the Machine
Bravi e convincenti. Lords of Decadence - Cognitive Note of Discord

BACK IN TIME:
#PER CHI AMA: Melo Death, Children of Bodom, Soilwork
(Francesco Scarci)
