Conclave - Breaking Ground

(Francesco Scarci)

A foot pushing the showel to dig the grave is not a good omen. This is the calling card of Conclave, a band from Massachussets that with the EP, 'Breaking Ground', makes their debut in the metal scene. The genre proposed by these guys becomes immediately clear by listening to the guitar sound of "Footprints in Blood", a song that with its sludgy riffs inspired to Black Sabbath, declares its love to doom rock, Jerry Orne's dirty voice and the sandy atmosphere of this album confirm the expectations on the sounds you are going to listen to and enjoy, especially live. In the second half of the opening track, the bass announces the entrance of the solo guitar and I am hit by a gust of hot wind brought by the six-string of Jeremy Kibort, in the vein of the early Cathedral. "Lifetime" is not so different from the previous track: a hard, threating and sludgy rock sensually dancing like a lap dancer wrapped around her pole. But don't be fooled by this image: psychedelic digressions, stoner and sludge will attack you like a snake twisted around your neck. And suddenly here I am at the last nine minutes of "Walk the Earth (No Longer)", that winks to the 70s', but at the same time keeps the sound unchanged, although the hammering rhythm seems very close to death metal. Very soon, the sound tends to a classic doom and flows into an amazing solo. It is a pity this is a 3-track album; it would have been a pleasure to listen to other 3 songs, and be buried six-feet under. (Francesco Scarci)
